Crisis = Danger and Opportunity!

by Alice Bourdon

Email forwards! Mostly they annoy me... You know the ones: “Forward this to ten people you care about, and you will be amazed to see what will pop up in your email in the next hour!” They are well-intentioned, but they feel like email “junk mail”!

I have a few friends who only send things that are worth consideration, and I opened one of those recently. In a very large font were two Chinese symbols. It was the Chinese word for “crisis.” We all have them...and they often surface in coaching sessions. Either they are the impetus for coaching to begin or become the topic of discussion within a coaching session. But here is the interesting insight: The two separate symbols are the Chinese characters for “danger” and “opportunity.” While crises are often unsettling and upsetting, with a broader perspective and a shift in mindset, the possibility that they represent opportunities can become a source of hope and positivity for us as coaches and for our clients.

So as we deal with crises, don’t forget to take that extra step to cast a vision forward and see how they might also represent opportunities...for growth, for change, for new vision, and resurrected dreams!
